Twenty-eight-year-old Chase A. Barfoot, of Topeka, was pronounced dead at the scene after a one-vehicle traffic crash occurred shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday just west of S.E. 61st and Berryton Road, said Sheriff Brian C. Hill.
Barfoot was alone driving a red 2011 GMC Sierra pickup truck westbound in the 2700 block of S.E. 61st when it left the roadway on its north side and struck multiple objects, including trees, culverts and a telephone pole, Hill said.
Circumstances of the crash remain under investigation, he said.
Barfoot was not wearing a seat belt. The sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by the Shawnee Heights Fire Department and an American Medical Response ambulance crew.
A GoFundMe fundraiser initiated in an effort to raise $1,000 to pay for Barfoot’s memorial had received commitments totaling $1,005 as of Monday morning, according to its website.
