POINT PLEASANT — After a skipped reception due to COVID-19 last year, teachers and service personnel for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years were honored at a reception Tuesday night at the central office for Mason County Schools.
“We are welcoming and recognizing some of Mason County’s finest education employees,” said Rick Handley, Mason County Commissioner.
Handley thanked all teachers and personnel for the work done everyday with the county’s youth.
“These educators and service personnel that we’re honoring this evening make a difference, not just the lives of the young people that they teach, but through their peers and also in the community,” Handley said. “We all know that Mason County has been truly blessed with many exceptional employees.
Ammie Jordan, a first grade teacher at New Haven Elementary, was awarded as the 2020-21 Mason County teacher of the year.
New Haven Elementary Principal Walter Raynes shared the energy Jordan brings to her classroom.
“She has this way of being able to connect with her students,” Raynes said. “And when you go into Mrs. Jordan’s classroom, you only have to be in there for just a few moments to be able to see that in person and to see the smiles on the kid’s faces, to see the energy that they have as a result of her energy, is just something that you don’t see in every single classroom.”
Virginia Hughes, aide at Point Pleasant Primary School (PPPS), was awarded as the 2020-21 Mason County service personnel of the year.
PPPS Principal Vickie Workman spoke about Hughes and her work at the school.
“One of the coolest parts about my job is getting to recognize special people, big people and little people,” Workman said. “She [Hughes] came to work just a few years ago with the Primary School and quickly became part of our family. That was a monumental day for all of us. Her kindness… gentleness, patience and compassion make her as beautiful on the inside as she is out.”
Heather Lloyd, a math teacher at Wahama Junior/Senior High School (WJ/SHS), was awarded the Mason County 2021-22 teacher of the year.
“She’s one of those teachers that is always looking for the next best thing to do with the class,” WJ/SHS Principal Melissa Vanmeter said. “She’s staying up, she’s making extra things in the summer, she’s always one step or 10 steps ahead of me. Always looking for the next best thing to do with the kids.”
Brigitte Rhodes, cook at Point Pleasant Intermediate School (PPIS), was awarded the Mason County 2021-22 service personnel of the year.
Stacey Walton, principal of PPIS, spoke on the love that Walton brings to the school. Walton had students write notes on what makes Rhodes special and read them during the reception.
“Roses are red, violets are blue. You are so sweet and I am too because I learned it from you,” one note read. “Roses are red, violets are blue, everyone in school loves you,” read another.
“As you can see, Virginia’s very special to Point Pleasant Intermediate School,” Walton said. “We’re blessed to have her as part of our school family.”
Mason County School Superintendent Keith Burdette spoke on the impact teachers and staff have on students and how the little things are never forgotten.
“That’s the kind of people that have the heart that make the school system so special,” Burdette said. “It is my honor and privilege to work with you and work for you.”
Ohio Valley Bank West Virginia and the Mason County Education Association co-sponsored the event with takeout meals, cupcakes, award plaques and a goodie bag.
