    Best Practices for Improving Artificial
    Intelligence

    Google’s latest neural network, BigSleep, uses two different types of neural networks to make
    decisions. One is a generative adversarial network (GAN) that takes random noise and outputs
    images. The other is a discriminator network. These systems can learn from their own
    mistakes and improve as they go, but they are still far from perfect. So, what are the best
    practices to improve AI? You can start by reading the following articles.
    Generate 1,000 types of things
    The Big Sleep is an AI that should be able to generate 1,000 different types of things. It is
    available as a Google Colab notebook. You’ll need to familiarize yourself with Colab before
    trying it out. Until then, it’s free to try. Other ways to test BigSleep will probably open up in the

    This artificial intelligence can match images, descriptions, and text. BigSleep works by looking
    through the outputs of BigGAN to find images that maximize CLIP’s scoring. It then tweaks the
    input noise in the BigGAN’s generator until it finds an image that matches the prompt. The
    entire process can take as little as three minutes. However, the program is not yet ready for
    use on human beings.
    Combines two neural networks
    The BigSleep is an AI system that combines the predictive abilities of CLIP and BigGAN.
    BigGAN specializes in 1000 image categories, including animal species. The BigSleep system
    uses this knowledge to search through the output of BigGAN for an image that best matches a
    given prompt. As a result, it can generate more than 1,000 types of images, with each image
    corresponding to a particular animal type.
    The researchers used 35 convolutional layers to create the model, which consists of an
    encoder and decoder. In one task, the encoder takes a full-length sleep record and gradually
    encrypts it into latent space. The dataset was divided into 8 million input spaces, with each
    recording centered in one of these spaces. When the algorithm learned from the data, it
    performed remarkably well on both tasks.
    OpenAI released the code for a text-to-image AI system in 2021. This AI system uses a
    multimodal neural network called CLIP, which evaluates text for images. The result is a pretty
    decent approximation of what you can say in words. This is an extremely promising AI system
    that can be used in many applications. The BigSleep is also a Colab playground, where you
    can try out the new technique and see if it works for you.
    The Big Sleep is like a sequel to DeepDream, but arguably better. DeepDream generated
    timeless alien views, whereas The Big Sleep lets you probe CLIP’s knowledge with natural
    language. Basically, anything you say to CLIP will be rendered through the lens of an alien
    dream. But the real challenge lies in integrating “omics” data into the data. It’s unclear what
    will happen when the Big Sleep and DeepDream are combined.
    Uses CLIP to match images and descriptions

    The CLIP model has been trained to match images and descriptions. The OpenAI team
    released the weights for their model in January 2021. It learned to match images and
    descriptions by looking at hundreds of millions of images. The CLIP model learns how images
    and descriptions are described in abstract ways, such as through multimodal neuron work. The

    algorithm then uses these representations to determine which caption matches a particular
    image.
    The Big Sleep has two neural networks: one, called BigGAN, takes in random noise and

    Is promising in contemporary medicine
    While it is unclear how AI can improve current clinical practices, it has huge potential in the
    area of sleep disorders. As many as 50 million US adults suffer from sleep disorders, which
    can have major consequences on work productivity and quality of life. AI can help doctors
    diagnose these sleep disorders more rapidly, which would dramatically improve patient care.
    But before AI can improve the diagnosis of sleep disorders, it must be proven it is safe for use
    in humans.
    While PSG data is largely unreliable, it is still used to diagnose sleep-related movement
    disorders outside of clinical settings. Deep learning algorithms can be used to assess data
    from noncontact sleep assessment devices. In addition, consumer wearables can use
    photoplethysmography, accelerometry, or headband-embedded dry electrode EEG sensors.
    Artificial intelligence-based sleep assessment is likely to have many other applications in
    modern medicine, such as improving the diagnosis of sleep disorders.
    A recent study found that ML techniques can automate PSG analysis, which is a cornerstone
    of sleep diagnostic testing. Sleep techs score PSGs in a structured manner, and the analysis
    is often focused on the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), which helps diagnose sleep-disordered
    breathing. This approach may contribute to better understanding of the genetic basis of the

    disorder, and it also likely helps explain the modest effects of CPAP on the symptoms of sleep-
    disordered breathing.

    AI will also improve healthcare by automating procedures and reducing technician burden. By
    acquiring PSG data automatically, AI can cut down on the time it takes to interpret the results.
    It will also help doctors understand sleep disorders and how they impact the health of patients.
    It will be exciting to see AI transform medical practices. But it will take some time. And it will
    require an entirely new paradigm in health care. For now, it is too early to say whether AI will
    replace the human brain.
